Magic Ring (mr)

An adjustable loop used to start projects worked in the round, allowing you to pull the center tight and eliminate the hole.

Also known as a Magic Circle or Adjustable Loop, this technique is the gold standard for starting any project worked in the round—especially amigurumi (crochet toys). Unlike the “Chain 2” method, the magic ring allows you to pull the starting hole completely closed, ensuring no stuffing leaks out.

How to do it

  1. Loop the Yarn: Drape the yarn over your open left hand. Wrap the tail end around your index and middle fingers to create an “X” on the front of your fingers.
  2. Insert Hook: Slide your crochet hook under the first strand of the “X” and hook the second (working yarn) strand.
  3. Pull and Twist: Pull the second strand under the first and give your hook a slight upward twist to create a loop on the hook.
  4. Secure with a Chain: Yarn over with the working yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. This creates a small chain that secures the ring.
  5. Work Stitches: Now, work your first round of stitches (usually 6 single crochets) over both strands: the loop of the ring and the yarn tail.
  6. Pull Tight: Once your stitches are complete, grab the short yarn tail and pull it firmly. The loop will shrink, closing the hole in the center.

Why use it?

  • Seamless Finish: It eliminates the unsightly gap in the middle of hats, coasters, and toys.
  • Adjustability: You can make the ring as large as you need while working, then cinch it tight at the end.
  • Strength: Working over the tail provides a double-layered foundation for your first round.

Troubleshooting & Tips

  • “My ring is coming undone!” This is common. The magic ring must be secured by weaving in the starting tail. After pulling it tight, use a tapestry needle to weave the tail through the first round of stitches in the opposite direction.
  • Hold the Join: When working the first few stitches into the ring, use your thumb and middle finger to pinch the spot where the loop crosses to keep it stable.
  • The Ch-2 Alternative: If you struggle with the magic ring, you can ch 2 and work all your first-round stitches into the 2nd chain from the hook. However, this will often leave a small permanent hole.
