Space (sp)

The gap created by a chain stitch in the previous row, often worked into rather than into a specific stitch.

A “space” refers to the hole created beneath a chain stitch. Instead of inserting your hook into the top “V” of a stitch, you insert it into the large opening below the chain.

Pattern Notation

  • ch-1 sp: A space created by a single chain.
  • ch-2 sp: A larger space created by two chains.

Working into a space is often faster and creates a more fluid, open fabric than working into individual stitches.
