Reading Amigurumi Patterns

Understanding the specific shorthand notation used in crochet toy patterns.

Amigurumi patterns often use a shorthand notation for repeated rounds. Understanding this is key to maintaining the correct shape.

Decoding the Syntax

Example: Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)

  • Rnd 4: Indicates you are on the fourth round.
  • [2 sc, inc]: This is the sequence you will repeat. You work 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then an increase in the next stitch.
  • x 6: Repeat the sequence inside the brackets 6 times in total for this round.
  • (24): The total number of stitches you should have at the end of the round. Always count your stitches before moving to the next round!

Common Abbreviations

  • sc: Single Crochet
  • inc: Increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec / inv dec: Decrease / Invisible Decrease
  • BLO: Back Loop Only (often used to create a sharp edge, like the bottom of a foot)
  • FLO: Front Loop Only
