Basic Stitches Beginner

Slip Stitch (sl st)

The shortest of all crochet stitches, used to join rounds, move yarn across a row, or finish an edge.

The slip stitch is not typically used to create fabric on its own. Instead, it is a utility stitch used for joining work together or adding decorative edgings.

How to do it

  1. Insert Hook: Push the hook into the designated stitch or space.
  2. Yarn Over: Wrap the yarn around the hook.
  3. Pull Through Everything: Pull the yarn through the stitch AND the loop already on your hook in one smooth motion.

Common Uses

  • Joining Rounds: Closing a circle of stitches when working in the round.
  • Seaming: Joining two pieces of finished crochet together.
  • Surface Crochet: Adding decorative lines of “chains” on top of existing fabric.
